Windows download and installation

There are three different windows files for download, depending on what you already have installed on your machine.

Use the following to determine which set of instructions to follow.

Important The files are currently replicating across all SourceForge servers. If the download is not immediately available, please try again later.

Windows complete installation

The installation wizard for Microsoft Windows installs all the software and components that you require for running Alfresco.

To install Alfresco Labs 3c:

1. Ensure you have downloaded Alfresco-Labs-3c-Full-Setup.exe.
2. Double-click Alfresco Labs-3c-Full-Setup.exe.
3. At the Language Selection prompt, select English and click OK.
4. When prompted to confirm installation, click Yes. The Installation wizard launches.
5. In the Welcome window, click Next.
6. In the Setup Type window, select Typical, and click Next.
7. In the Choose Destination Location window, click Next to accept the default location for Alfresco Labs 3c.
8. In the Start Copying Files window, review the settings and click Next. The installation starts.
9. In the Database Selection window, select Derby as the database to use for your evaluation, and click Next. To run Alfresco Share in a production environment, replace this with a production quality database, such as MySQL.
10. In the InstallJammer Wizard Complete window, click Finish.
11. In the Readme window, click Close.

The installation is complete. To run Alfresco, see Running Alfresco Labs 3.

Windows installation excluding JDK

If you already have the Java Developer Toolkit (JDK) installed, complete the following instructions. Alfresco supports JDK 5 or 6 (latest versions of either).

To install Alfresco Labs 3c, excluding JDK:

1. Ensure you have downloaded Alfresco-Labs-3c-OOo-Setup.exe
2. Double-click Alfresco Labs-3c-OOo-Setup.exe.
3. At the Language Selection prompt, select English and click OK.
4. When prompted to confirm installation, click Yes. The Installation wizard launches.
5. In the Welcome window, click Next. The Browse for Folders window displays, prompting you to locate your JDK installation.
6. Browse to your JDK installation and click OK.
7. In the Setup Type window, select Typical, and click Next.
8. In the Choose Destination Location window, click Next to accept the default location to install Alfresco Labs 3.
9. In the Start Copying Files window, review the settings and click Next. The installation starts. A prompt notifies you when OpenOffice is being installed. No action is required.
10. In the Database Selection window, select Derby as the database to use for your evaluation, and click Next. To run Alfresco Share in a production environment, replace this with a production quality database, such as MySQL.
11. In the InstallJammer Wizard Complete window, click Finish.
12. In the Readme window, click Close.

The installation is complete. To run Alfresco, see Running Alfresco Labs 3.

Windows installation excluding JDK and OpenOffice

If you already have the Java Developer Toolkit (JDK) 5 or 6 and OpenOffice installed, complete the following instructions. You can also use these instructions if you do not want to use OpenOffice for document conversions.

To install Alfresco Labs 3c, excluding JDK and OpenOffice:

1. Ensure you have downloaded Alfresco-Labs-3c-Mini-Setup.exe
2. Double-click Alfresco Labs-3c-Mini-Setup.exe.
3. At the Language Selection prompt, select English and click OK.
4. When prompted to confirm installation, click Yes. The Installation wizard launches.
5. In the Welcome window, click Next. The Browse for Folders window displays, prompting you to locate your JDK installation.
6. Browse to your JDK installation and click OK.
7. In the Setup Type window, select Typical, and click Next.
8. In the Choose Destination Location window, click Next to accept the default location for Alfresco Labs 3.
9. In the Start Copying Files window, review the settings and click Next. The installation starts.
10. In the Database Selection window, select Derby as the database to use for your evaluation, and click Next. To run Alfresco Share in a production environment, replace this with a production quality database such as MySQL.
11. In the OpenOffice Location window, browse to your OpenOffice location and click OK. If you do not want to use OpenOffice for your document conversions, select the Alfresco installation folder as the location.
12. In the InstallJammer Wizard Complete window, click Finish.
13. In the Readme window, click Close.

Linux download and installation

The following installation files are available for download:

• Linux installer: Alfresco-Labs-3c-Linux-x86-Install See the instructions for the complete installation.
• Tomcat Bundle: alfresco-labs-tomcat-3c.tar.gz
• WAR File Only: alfresco-labs-war-3c.tar.gz
• Alfresco WCM and Web Studio (optional, requires one of the above): alfresco-labs-wcm-3c.tar.gz

Linux complete installation

These instructions are for working in an X11 environment. For instructions for Installing Labs 3 on Linux with command line interface.

Before you install Alfresco, ensure that you have JDK 5 or 6 installed on your machine.

To install Alfresco Labs 3c using the Linux installer:

1. Ensure you have downloaded Alfresco- Labs-3c-Linux-x86-Install.
2. Run Alfresco-Labs-3c-Linux-x86-Install.
3. At the Language Selection prompt, select English and click OK.
4. When prompted to confirm installation, click Yes. The Installation wizard launches.
5. In the Welcome window, click Next. The Browse for Folder window displays, prompting you to locate your JDK installation.
6. Browse to your JDK installation and click OK.
7. In the Setup Type window, select Typical and click Next. Typical install selects all the default options for installation. To modify the installation settings, select Custom and click Next.
8. In the Choose Destination Location window, click Next to accept the default location for Alfresco Labs 3c.
9. In the Start Copying Files window, review the settings and click Next. The installation starts.
10. In the OpenOffice Location window, browse to your OpenOffice location and click OK. If you do not want to use OpenOffice for your document conversions, select the Alfresco installation folder as the location. (Note: In the current version, the installer looks for <path>/soffice.exe, so as workaround until fixed, cp soffice.bin soffice.exe will help the installer to finish correctly. [[1]])
11. In the InstallJammer Wizard Complete window, click Finish.
12. In the Readme window, click Close.

Installing Alfresco components

Alfresco requires additional software components to ensure that all its functionality is available, for example, Flash, SWF Tools. These components can be installed either before or after you have installed Alfresco.

For information on how to install the additional components, refer to Installing Alfresco components.

Installing SharePoint Protocol Support

Note: If you use the Windows or Linux installers to install Alfresco Labs 3, the SharePoint Protocol Support is installed by default. These instructions describe how to install the SharePoint Protocol Support into the Alfresco WAR. When you install this file, it responds to the SharePoint requests from Office, and therefore allows Alfresco to appear as a SharePoint server.

To install the SharePoint Protocol Support:

1. Shut down your Alfresco server.
2. Install the vti-module.amp file into the alfresco.war file using the Module_Management_Tool. The vti-module.amp file holds the functionality for the Sharepoint connector.
3. Copy the ROOT.war file into the Tomcat webapps folder:
   1. Delete the ROOT folder from the webapps folder (if there is one).
   2. Copy ROOT.war into the webapps folder.
   3. Start your Alfresco server.

Running Alfresco Labs 3

This section describes how to run the Alfresco server and web client.

Starting the Alfresco server

Once you have installed Alfresco, you can test the installation by starting the server.

To start Alfresco on Windows:

• If you have installed Labs 3 using the installer, from the Start menu, select All Programs > Alfresco Labs > Start Alfresco Server, or
• Browse to C:\Alfresco and double-click alf_start.bat

A DOS window opens displaying a message indicating the server has started. INFO: Server startup in nnnn ms

To start Alfresco on Linux:

• Browse to /opt/alfresco/ and run alfresco.sh start

Stopping the Alfresco server

To stop the Alfresco server on Windows:

• If you have installed Labs 3 using the installer, from the Start menu, select All Programs > Alfresco Labs > Stop Alfresco Server, or
• Browse to C:\Alfresco and double-click alf_stop.bat

The DOS window that opened during startup closes, and Alfresco has stopped.

To stop the Alfresco server on Linux:

• Browse to /opt/alfresco/ and run alfresco.sh stop

Starting the web client and Share

To start the web client on Windows:

1. From the Start menu, select All Programs > Alfresco Labs > Alfresco Web Client
2. Log in using admin as the default user name and password.

To start Alfresco Share on Windows:

1. From the Start menu, select All Programs > Alfresco Labs > Alfresco Share
2. Log in using admin as the default user name and password.

To start the web client on any platform:

1. From your web browser connect to: http://HOSTNAME:8080/alfresco
2. Log in using admin as the default user name and password.

To start Alfresco Share on any platform:

1. From your web browser connect to: http://HOSTNAME:8080/share
2. Log in using admin as the default user name and password.
